Chuck Swindoll wrote in his book Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life,
I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, than memorizing Scripture. No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified.”
Ahhh I seriously love that quote, because it’s filled with so much wisdom and truth!!! Something amazing happens when the word of God is so readily available that we can literally recite it at any moment. When depression creeps in you don’t have to dwell over the lies Satan is speaking to you, all you have to do is speak Gods truth! This month I’m planning to memorize 6 verses in hopes of doing just that! I’d love for you to join me! But if you need a little extra push, here are just 6 ways Scripture Memorization can help you when you are grieiving.
1. Helps us fight depression and the lies of Satan
2 Timothy 3:16—All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
2. Memorizing Scripture renews our mind, changes our attitudes and transforms our lives
Romans 12:2—Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
3. It provides direction when you can’t find the words to pray
John 15:7—If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
4. It gives us hope and reminds us of Gods promises
Psalm 119:105—Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
5. There is blessing in it
Joshua 1:8—This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
And the best reason of all to memorize scripture….. Jesus memorized it!
Jesus quoted from 24 different books roughly 180 times! It’s clear that he thought it was pretty important.
